Roulette Strategy

Welcome to our Roulette strategy page which deals with various tactics and tips that some players use at the roulette tables.  If you are unfamiliar with how to play this game, please first read our overview of Casino Roulette to get a solid idea of the rules and betting combinations in the game.  Roulette strategy is somewhat of a debatable topic since there are no proven systems which guarantee that you will win each time you bet.  That being said, there are a number of different betting techniques and methods which players use when playing online roulette games.

It's important to note that whatever someone tells you there simply is not a system or strategy for roulette that can increase your edge against the house.  This is due to the house edge in the game which cannot be manipulated (legally) since it is based on mathematical outcomes and returns for the game.  Although this is the undeniable case, there are of course still players who use systems or their own roulette strategy at the table.  We have outlined some of those strategies below and provided information on how they work and are used by casino players.

Incremental Betting

The most popular roulette strategy involves what is known as progressive betting which basically uses the Martingale System to determine how you should bet.  The way this method works is that the player doubles their bet when they lose and only bets 1 unit when they win, with the idea that any losses will be recouped since you will doubling each bet until you win.  The obvious problem with this methodology is that you can run out of money very fast as is the case with most roulette systems.

For example if you were to go on a losing streak with Martingale you could easily find yourself betting huge amounts of money due to its progressive style.  If you started with a $50 bet a losing streak would mean $50, $100, $200, $400, $800 and so on.  This is the main reason that this betting strategy in Roulette is not very efficient, since not many players don't have the bankroll to sustain the system.

Game Selection

The only proven method to get an advantage in casino roulette it to be wise when selecting your roulette table in the casinos.  As you may have read in our roulette overview, American and European roulette are the two variations which you will find in most casinos worldwide.  The most significant difference between each game is the fact that the American versions has 0 and 00 while the European version only has a single 0 on the wheel.  While this may sound like a very unimportant factor, it actually does effect the house edge and in return the overall chances of winning as a player.  As you can see from the data below, your chances of winning each bet in a roulette game improve slightly if you are always playing the European version.

Do Any Roulette Strategies or Systems Work?

As we've mentioned at the beginning of this page, there is no strategy or system that will give you a positive expectation over the casino house edge in the game of roulette.  This is because the game is based on fixed bets which each have an exact mathematical probability of occurring and have been designed to allow for a house edge of around 5% give or take for the casinos.  As much as we would like to believe there is a "legal" way to win at roulette games consistently, the simple truth is that with standard rules that edge for the house will always exist.

The best roulette strategy that we can really recommend to our visitors is to use limits on your gambling bankroll as well as setting win goals.  This way you will be able to control how much money you are spending at the table and ensure that any wins you make will be enjoyed rather than gambled away.  Roulette is an excellent casino game to play for entertainment purposes however is not the type of casino game that you would expect to play for profit over a long period of time.  Overall, you should enjoy roulette games but realize that eventually the house edge will catch up to you and there is no roulette strategy system that can change that.
